How Organ Donation Works

How organ donation works and what's organ donation? We have covered the answers to these questions lingering on your mind.

Let’s start with what's organ donation?

Organ Donation is a noble deed of donating your organs or biological tissues to a living recipient. The person who donates the organ is called a Donor and then transplants it into a recipient.

The Donation usually helps save people whose lives could be saved only with an active functioning organ.

But beyond organs such as the Kidney, Heart, Liver, Pancreas, Intestines, and Lungs, the donation can extend to Tissues of a body as well.

Tissue is a group of cells that have a similar structure and that function together as a unit. Tissues of a body are of
  • Cornea
  • Bones
  • Skin
  • Veins
Hope you got a basic understanding of Organ Donation and its definition. Now let's jump to your 2nd question

How does Organ Donation Works?

The Organ donation extends to both Living and Deceased Donors.

Living Donor:
  • Living Donors will be undergoing medical tests to make sure if they are fit to donate.
  • After all the test results are positively confirmed, doctors surgically retrieve the organ and store it in a curated chemical solution before transplanting it to the recipient.
  • The donor will be under medical care for a few days or weeks where they are observed by a doctor until the donor fits to go home.
Deceased Donor:
  • A deceased donor is someone who has suffered a fatal injury or brain hemorrhage. The person who is declared brain stem dead by the medical experts.
  • Before Organ retrieval, the donor's family consent is required to start the retrieval process till then the donor body is kept under life support.
  • Once the consent is given, medical experts surgically extract the organs and simultaneously find suitable recipients from the waiting list where they are notified.
  • After the Organ retrieval is done, the donor's body is honorably handed over to the family.

An important piece of information or fact you should remember is even though when a person has pledged his organ and carries a donor card unless and until his family gives consent the medical experts can never operate to retrieve the organs as the donor wished for.

So, it is crucial for an organ pledger to create an awareness of how important and why you have taken this decision or feel free to share a few articles from our blog which is what we are delinquently aimed at doing " Creating an Awareness"
